Learning from other breeds

All of the above Filas are steep in croup. This adds to the high rears that we see in this breed and our own.

In the first picture, we see a long legged Fila which raises his front. Had this Fila had the correct front, his rear would be very high.

High rears are not just a puppy phase in Mastiffs. High rears are a genetic result of poor planning when pairing dogs for breeding. Low tail sets usually indicate a steep croup and this leads to sloping toplines with loaded fronts.

When all the weight is pushed up front, through a sloping topline towards the front end of a Mastiff, it can create a number of issues. This places an extra burden on the dogs pasterns and leads to compression issues over time. It also creates poor aesthetics, as balance is compromised.

Level toplines with level rears are due to a number of factors, but the most important factor is a croup that is not too steep. A steep croup in a Mastiff can move the rear legs towards the front, instead of the rear legs being behind the dog as in the picture below............

(Beau Ideal)
The rear is level compared to the Filas above.
Unfortunately, some have come to accept high rears and expect that in our breed. If we recognize certain traits that can give us an indication of future issues, we can reduce these high rears and eventually make them a rarity instead of the norm.

When choosing a pup study it's parents and then study the pup. Become aware of traits like the angle of croup and try to pick level toplines. This will reduce your odds of winding up with a Fila rear instead of a proper Mastiff rear!

It should be worth noting, that as beautiful and acclaimed as Beau Ideal was, she actually was too long in the leg up front! This aided her nice topline, as it raised her front, but was structurally incorrect. This may have been accompanied by a short radius as well.

Forum: Mastiff Message Board

Tracy is a DJ at a local radio station. He has his own show called The Down Home Blues and Boogie Show. It's on your radio every Wednesday night at 8:00 eastern time on WHAP 1340 in the Hopewell, VA area. It streams live on the web at http://1340whap.com.

Just wanted to share. Thanks for letting me share.

PS ~ He does not use his real name or real voice. It's actually quite funny to listen to since I know what he really sounds like and who it really is on the air! It is him though... I hear his radio voice here at home sometimes. Not sure what's wrong with that boy

Forum: Mastiff Message Board

the other day I made cupcakes and I was standing at the counter putting on the icing - when I was finished (with my back still turned towards the counter) I yelled "ok who wants a cupcake?" when I turned and looked down there was Heather on one side, Kaitlyn on the other side and right in the middle Brittany's big ole head!!! I thought that was so cute apparently she thought she was included when I asked who wanted a cupcake! (so of course you know she got one LOL!)

Forum: Mastiff Message Board

Compatibility breeding

"Breed the best to the best" is a nice axiom, but what does it actually mean?

A bitch that is 26" and has the same proportional balance to a dog that is 33" should be a good match right?

WRONG!

Why?

I'll tell ya...........

The bitch's balanced bone structure, even if perfectly balanced, is made up of different lengths when compared to the larger dog's balanced bone structure.

This can produce irregularities in front to rear heights and all sorts of variabilities in other structural aspects as well.

Another reason why I like doggie bitches over smaller bitches.

The genes don't know that they are balanced in a given dog. They are just programmed to express the traits that we humans see and evaluate as correct, or not.

Since most males are larger than most females, it creates a problem in knowing in advance which pairing will be most compatible. Suffice it to say, that extremes in any field won't work well percentage wise. So the only solution is to breed those that come closest to one another in desirable traits/parts, or to put it another way, breed the best parts to the best parts!

Some structural compatibilities are difficult to determine, so extra effort is needed to insure better outcomes. Some dogs may have similar shoulder layback, but may not be compatible in the structural components that produce that assembly. For example, a short radius can be ignored and when bred to another "good" shoulder assembly, it can suddenly appear in the get without ever realizing from whence it came. Subtle structural inconsistencies are often ignored prior to breeding, as the whole dog is typically assessed, without recognizing the parts that make up that whole.

Ignoring the parts have been the biggest reason for variability in structure over the years. Some fanciers feel that the whole dog is what should be judged and not the parts. They get this idea from the show circuit, which correctly judges each dog as a whole against it's standard ideal.

But when breeding, pairing two good wholes can result in a negative outcome, if the parts are not evaluated well before the mating.

So to summerize, compatibility doesn't mean combining two great looking dogs, it means combining two dogs with similar structural positives that can be passed on to their get, with the least amount of distortion, or variability.

Forum: Mastiff Message Board

Would you buy a dog

without reading up on the breed? I remember when we first decided to get a dog - honestly I wanted a dog SO bad I would have taken anything - but then we narrowed it down when we saw a Mastiff pup in the pet store (I know I know - we never considered buying from the pet store :-) anyway once we saw the dog I started reading about them - I read everything I could for a few months and I would bring home what I found and let my husband read as well and that is how we decided we wanted a mastiff to join our family. Everything I read I liked (oh yeah the drooling part - I didn't actually "like" but I didn't mind either - let's put it this way all the other good points about the mastiff knocked out the drooling )

It bothers me when I hear someone buys a dog without even knowing anything at all about the dog - just that they like the way it looks. Then down the road they complain that the dog is this or that KWIM?

Forum: Mastiff Message Board

This is what I found when my husband and I heard our bedroom door shut the other night and we realized that Blossom was with us, but that neither Elsa or Hank were...Hank had put himself to bed (which he sometimes does) and Elsa decided there was a nice cozy spot on his bed left for her. I have to say I could not love this dog or this little girl more!!!

Forum: Mastiff Message Board

Need Help to Slow Eatting Down

Have any of you used any of those dishes made to slow fast eatters down. I have a dog that enhails her food. I have tried putting all kinds of things in her dish to slow her down but nothing really works.

I found these dishes on line but wondered if anyone has used them or have something else that would work better. I really am not a fan of plastic and almost all of them that look like they would work best are plastic.

This one appears to be the best but only hold 2 cups, she only eats three at a time so I am sure it would work.
http://www.eatslowerpetdishes.com/shop/products.php?cat=7

Or
http://www.brake-fast.net/

There is also this metal one but I do not think it would slow her down enough
http://www.jbpet.com/Durapet-Slow-Feed-Bowl,7476.html

Any ideas would be great, thanks

Forum: Mastiff Message Board
