so i have heard they go into heat when they are  about at 85% of their adult body weight....Tempest is now 6 months old and 95 pounds......what is the average age for a mastiff to go into heat? I do not have any other intact bitches, nor gone through a heat before....but..being that we all have to start sometime...should i be on the look out from here on out?

Gemini went into her first heat at 92lbs when she was about 8/9 months old.  Since she was a rescue, we don't know her exact birthdate but was born most likely in February/March of 2008.  She is now about 15 months old and weighs 104lbs (really small for a Mastiff).

Watch for her pad to get baggy on her butt...We call it the vulva pad. then her vulva will swell, she will start licking and cleaning herself. Tessa and Raye come in at 6 months like clock work. Tessa started out with a regular heat, went 4 months, then 6 months from then on out. Raye has been consistent. The puppies, Daria is a 5 monther, her sister are now 6 months. Normally the first heat is at about 6-8 months. Raye and Tessa were no where the percentages you mentioned. Raye  was probably 110 she is now 193, Tessa is a smaller bitch maybe guessing 95 at the time. At her prime she weighed 150. Now 165 at 8 and is spayed.

Clear as mud...Keep in mind they can get weird during the first heat...They do not understand what is happening to them.

Don't really remember weights, but all of my girls have been different ages when they went into heat. The latest was 15 months old and the youngest was 9 months old. It seems the giant breeds do not go into heat as young as little dogs. I know most little dogs hit about 6 months old.

And Steph, saying they get wierd during their heat cycles is a MAJOR understatement! LOL!!! Mine become the devil for a few weeks....

Do you know what this "pad" is for?  It's so soft!

I had a Bullmastiff a few yrs back. When she went into heat, she was as bad as my Mastiff girls...Some can be real pains in any breed....They can PMS also. one of the puppies from my last litter is a drama queen when in heat...Whines, throws herself, and will not leave her dad alone (human)....Her mom calls and thanks me everytime she has had a heat. She was spayed last week....

Steve,

That is like the third post of yours today that I have looked at for a minute and gone huh, then busted up laughing when I "got it". Little slow on the uptake.

I dont know about that 85% of body weight thing. I heard so much stuff with Adora and Justice and both came in at way different times and didnt do anything that people said they were going to. Justice came in really young at about 7.5 months. I will look up what she weighed on my old computer for you.

Our Saint didn't have her first cycle until she was 13 months. Abby our Mastiff is 7 months tomorrow and I don't foresee her coming in anytime soon. She's taking her own sweet time, which she does with everything! Eating, destroying things, waking up or just getting out of bed.

Lily had her first heat at 7 months  she was over 100 pounds I think.  It was very short.

She just had another heat at 12 months.  This was the regular one with all the lovely mess.  She did well.  I think she was a bit more clingy than usual.

Cali had her first heat at 7 months.  She was 74 pounds and is now 140 or so and still filling out.  That heat lasted 5 weeks.  Oh the joy!  She then proceeded to come in every 5 months or a little less.  She'd cycled twice by the time most of her siblings even had once.  The last pup to cycle was at 15 months.  All of which were at similar body weight, give or take  a little bit.  I think with some bloodlines it might be predictable, but with this particular litter it was all over the board.  (Cali and the one that went 15 months are on the same diet and supplements).
