Ajax was a half brother to Jackie Guy's Caesar lll.

They both needed angulation, but did well at local shows, given the limited turnout of mastiffs in the 70's.

Both were rich apricots and received that from their Nantymynydd heritage!

Barry the "famous" Saint Bernard

The first stuffed Barry (1814) The remounted Barry (1923) as displayed until 1998

Barry was brought to Berne by a monk in 1812. This is a fact that the old Prior confirmed to Heinrich Schumacher in 1866. Barry remained in Berne and finally died at the age of 14. His body was stuffed and put on exhibit. The taxidermist gave Barry a rather humble and meek attitude because the Prior wanted Barry to serve as a reminder of constant servitude to future generations. In 1923, the old mounted Barry was refurbished. Barry had become rather brittle and his coat had dissolved into over 20 pieces. It is thanks to the craftsmanship of the next taxidermist, Georg Ruprecht that Barry was so expertly preserved.

So what do we learn from Barry in relation to our concept of "correct" mastiff type.

Well for one thing, we learn that Barry didn't have much mastiff in him at all.

Back then, the Saint Bernard was not the same dog that we have come to know at present.

The mastiff's influence, which came after Barry, produced the present day Saint.

I believe that Barry represented the local alpine dogs, which the monks bred for 800 years prior to Barry.

The Saint is the mastiff's closest living relative and the Saint's type is perhaps the "truest" form of the "old mastiff"( excluding the Newfs influence in the long coated variety ).

Greenbranch Prince Regent ( Taurus ) Ch Artifex Astronaut X CH Dame Sybil of Greenbranch

Taurus was the MCOA BOB Gulf Mills Resounder's half brother

Unfortunately, he didn't inherit Resounders fathers genes!

Hi Steve,

I *think* Resounder was owned by East Coasters. Deb (NJ) has one of my grandpuppies now, that is how we met.

Indeed, I will be at Somerset tomorrow. Not sure if I will have any dogs in tow though. All riding on the results of my one girls ultrasound this morning.  Should be a great show, MASTIFFS galore, food, raffle, prizes and rescue info!

Giselle is en route from Texas as we type (no dogs).  She is staying with me this weekend, so you can hook up with her as well.

Thanks for the compliments on the head shots! Which ones do you like?

Mike Gensberger lived in Pa. for a bit, then moved to the west coast.

I saw Resounder showing in the east, but can't recall if Ed was involved with the breeding or Mike. I have to assume Ed since he owned Sybil.

I believe Mike bought Sybil from Ed Gerace and took her with him, but it's been a while and I could be wrong.
