The NBC Today Show listed the Dorito's Superbowl Commercial featuring the kid riding the English Mastiff as being #2 in popularity out of all of the commercials.  While it could be construed as entertaining by some I feel strongly that it is grossly irresponsible and dangerous.  This is without a doubt in my mind, solicitation to commit animal cruelty by promoting this as acceptable and cute behavior. The Today Show failed to pick up on the danger involved to the dog.

Mastiffs and other breeds should NEVER be subjected to such cruel abuse and this ad is tantamount to saying that it is okay to put a kid on your dog's back.  There should have been a warning at the very least or better yet make it an animated cartoon instead of CGI.  Yes, I know it was CGI and the kid really wasn't on the Mastiff's back. The issue is not about the reality of the commercial it's about the message it sends out to the public without any sort of cautionary advice.

I am hoping to get a petition started with Mastiff owners at the front of the line to get the information out that this is hazardous to dogs health and can likely cause serious and irreversible injury to the dog and maybe the kid too.

The commercial can be seen here for those that missed it:

Two things:

First, I will gladly sign a petition regarding the danger of this type of activity and, two, I believe that NBC and the Today show should be contacted for not indicating that this is unacceptable behavior!

I just spoke with Jessica at the American Humane Society's Film and Television Unit.   They will absolutely get the word out to the public IF, and only if, enough people email or call them and complain about this commercial.

Please for the sake of the millions of large and giant dogs out there that are about to be irreversibly injured by this idiotic and cruel behavior contact her and PETA about this.

The email address for the Film and Television Unit is:  filmunit@americanhumane.org  Jessica's phone number is (818) 501-0123 Please call AND email!
