THERE WILL BE A CYSTINURIA CLINIC AT THE REMC DOG SHOW
ON SATURDAY, October 17th. I will also be there on Sunday/Monday if that works better for you.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO TEST YOUR BELOVED ENGLISH MASTIFFS:

1) Cystinuria is an inherited disease that has been found in English
Mastiffs. Cystinuria is caused when the kidneys cannot properly
filter and transport cystine. This causes abnormally high levels of
cystine in the urine. When cystine isn't able to break down it can
cause cystine crystals (sandy grit) and possibly cystine stones to
form in the kidneys and urinary tract.

2) Our female English Mastiffs are believed to be carriers but testing
is encouraged for research purposes. In the English Mastiff breed our
male dogs are the ones who test positive and can be affected.

3) If your male is positive, due to his anatomy he may become
completely blocked. If a blockage occurs, the dog's bladder may
become extremely distended and it may be at risk of rupturing. This
has been known to happen.
A complete blockage can also lead to kidney failure and death, even
prior to the bladder rupture.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR TESTING

1) Wait 2 to 4 hours after feeding to collect urine, place in
something you can freeze if you are collecting at home or the blue
top tube if your have a Cystinuria kit. Document the time of
collecting. You can collect your dogs urine the week of the show
and if you collect at home please bring to the show in some kind of
cooler. We will have supplies at the show to collect there if you
prefer.

2) Please bring a 5 generation pedigree with you.

3) The Mastiff Cystinuria urine screening test form needs to be
completed,
We will be providing forms at the Dog Show or you can download a copy at

4) You will need to write down your dog's diet and any medication or
supplements given to him or her on the form.

5) Testing should be done annually being at 18mos.

6) The fee is $ 20.00 please write check/payment to REMC.
The fee is usually $40.00, but UPENN is giving us a discount to get more dogs tested.
Remember you don't have to pay for shipping.

You will also find instructions on when to collect after feeding your dog and info applying to any supplements.

Just to clarify....
I will have collection tubes onsight...however, if you get tubes from your vet,
PLEASE BE SURE they are URINE TUBES...NOT BLOOD TUBES !!!

I will have kits premade with everything you need..... well, except the "donation" from your dog!

I'll test Abrams there since I was planning on it anyways... will have it collected there though, not trying to drive 9+ hrs with pee in the car, lol!!Like that guy, haven't used him before!!
